Michigan players stand out in NFL action this week

Well, since I was able to watch some college football yesterday, today, I've actually been able to catch a few NFL contests, as well. I normally have so much else going on I'm unable to spend two straight weekend days watching the game I love so much. That being said, today's NFL action featured so many players from the state of Michigan, it was incredible. Just goes to show the level of talent being developed and produced by the Great Lakes State year after year.

I need to start out with the New Orleans Saints and their clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Though losing to the Bucs 26-19, Saints' WR Willie Snead (Muskegon Heights/Holland Christian, Ball State) had a fantastic game finishing with four receptions for 44 yards and one touchdown. I remember watching Snead in the state championship game at Ford Field when he played for Holland Christian and thinking he had the best hands I'd ever seen for a high school receiver. I was shocked when he signed with Ball State and not a Big Ten program. Also starting for the Saints were RB Mark Ingram Jr. (Flint Southwestern, Alabama), who finished with 53 yards rushing on 16 attempts with one TD and OG Tim Lelito (St. Clair, Grand Valley State). Lelito is another player overlooked and misevaluated by Michigan's five D-I playing college football programs. Hopefully, those days of poor instate recruiting/knowledge are over for Michigan's D-I playing schools. For Tampa Bay, DE Will Gholston (Detroit Southeastern, MSU) and K Kyle Brindza (Plymouth, Notre Dame) saw action, while OT Reid Fragel (Grosse Pointe South, Ohio State) made the Buccaneers' practice squad.

In the Philadelphia Eagles-Dallas Cowboys game, multiple Michigan natives suited up for both squads. On defense for the Eagles, LB Connor Barwin (U-D Jesuit, Cincinnati) and LB Brandon Graham (Detroit Crockett, now Detroit East English Village, U-M) both started and played well, while LB Brad Jones (East Lansing, Colorado) also saw action. For the Cowboys, CB Brandon Carr (Flint Carmen-Ainsworth, Grand Valley State) started and is one of the NFL's best at his position. Making plays on special teams and in the secondary for Dallas was S Jeff Heath (Lake Orion, Saginaw Valley State).

Watching the Oakland Raiders-Baltimore Ravens contest, it was interesting seeing head coach John Harbaugh (Ann Arbor Pioneer, Miami (OH)) prowling the sidelines for the Ravens. Harbaugh doesn't get as much publicity as his younger brother Jim Harbaugh (head coach at U-M), but, in my opinion, John is one of the NFL's best coaches. Also suiting up for Baltimore was DE Jason Babin (Paw Paw, WMU) and DT Carl Davis (Sterling Heights Stevenson, Iowa). On the Ravens' practice squad are DT Micajah Reynolds (Lansing Sexton, MSU) and LB Brennen Beyer (Plymouth, U-M).

Other Michigan players I noticed throughout the day competing at the highest football level were Minnesota Vikings RB Zach Line (Oxford, SMU), LB Audie Cole (Monroe, North Carolina State) and C Joe Berger (Newaygo, Michigan Tech) , Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Robinson (Orchard Lake St. Mary's, Penn State), who finished with six catches for 155 yards and two TDs and LB Dan Skuta (Flint Powers Catholic, Grand Valley State) and Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins (Holland Christian, MSU), who ended up 23-of-27 passing for 203 yards and one TD. Cousins led the Redskins to a 24-10 win over the St. Louis Rams.

In the Sunday Night Football primetime game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, a large contingent of Michigan players saw action for both squads. For the Packers, OG T.J. Lang (Birmingham Brother Rice, EMU) and DE/LB Nick Perry (Detroit King, USC) started, while WR Jeff Janis (Tawas, Saginaw Valley State) contributed on special teams. For Seattle, RB Thomas Rawls (Flint Northern, U-M/CMU) saw action in the backfield. It was nice seeing Rawls make an NFL roster and playing under the bright primetime lights at Lambeau Field, since I always thought he was woefully overlooked at U-M and seemed to receive somewhat of a raw deal while in Ann Arbor. I have no idea why he didn't see more action while playing for the Maize and Blue. Though, I guess, a lot of things haven't made much sense in Ann Arbor these past few seasons. Hopefully, the ship has been righted at U-M with the new coaching staff/culture. Either way, the cream always rises to the top and Rawls wouldn't be making an NFL roster if he didn't have big time, elite skills as a running back. It was nice seeing him finally getting his just rewards.

Michigan kids shine in college football games

Wow, I'm always amazed, though I should know better, whenever I get the chance to actually sit down and watch a full day of college football (yes, I ate an entire large pepperoni pizza and washed it down with a two-liter of Pepsi while sitting in my Lazy-Boy for almost 12 hours straight -- who doesn't??) how many Michigan kids are playing in the games I get a chance to watch (or see highlights of).

I'm not even going to comment on the MSU or U-M games, there are just too many Michigan players to mention. Though senior WR Aaron Burbridge (6-1, 195, Farmington Hills Harrison) had quite a day for No. 4-ranked MSU catching three touchdown passes, including one of the best TD receptions of the young college football season. That being said, it was enjoyable to watch junior OT Chauncey Briggs (6-6, 300, West Bloomfield) start for SMU in the Mustangs' 56-37 loss to No. 3-ranked TCU. Briggs is a three-year starter for SMU (1-2 overall).

Staying on the O-line, I watched junior OG Steve Elmer (6-5, 315, Midland) start for No. 8-ranked Notre Dame (3-0) in the Irish's 30-22 victory over Georgia Tech. Elmer is a three-year starter for Notre Dame. On the sidelines, West Bloomfield native and Wayne State grad Brian Van Gorder was barking out instructions and flashing signs as defensive coordinator for the Irish.

In the Northern Illinois-Ohio State game, it was interesting to see redshirt junior OG Ron (formerly Daron) Brown (6-3, 345, Detroit Mumford) start for the Huskies (2-1), who gave the host No. 1-ranked Buckeyes a scare before falling 20-13. In the coaches booth, I believe I spotted Chelsea native and Northwestern grad Joe Tripodi. Tripodi, in his sixth season with NIU, is an assistant coach/offensive line coach for the Huskies. Tripodi was a two-year starter at OG for Northwestern in the early 2000s.

In Penn State's 28-3 win over Rutgers, senior DT Anthony Zettel (6-4, 285, West Branch Ogemaw Heights) started for the Nittany Lions (2-1). A returning All-Big Ten player, Zettel, a three-year starter, should be playing on Sundays next year.

In Iowa's thrilling 27-24 win over Pittsburgh, junior CB Desmond King (5-11, 200, Detroit Crocket, now Detroit East English Village) started for the Hawkeyes (3-0). King, a three-year starter, had a terrific game finishing with two interceptions, eight tackles and one tackle for loss. For Pitt, another former Detroit Public School League standout, sophomore CB Avonte Maddox (5-9, 170, Detroit King) started for the Panthers. Maddox, a two-year starter, had a strong game, as well, ending up with nine tackles, one tackle for loss and one pass break-up. On the coaching side, Maddox is mentored by PSL legend Renaldo Hill (Detroit Chadsey, MSU-where he was All-Big Ten and a Spartan captain, NFL-10-year career as a DB), who is Pitt's defensive backs coach.

In Tennessee's 55-10 victory over Western Carolina, freshman RB John Kelly (5-9, 215, Oak Park) is the Volunteers' No. 2 back, seeing plenty of action in his inaugural season in Knoxville. Against Western Carolina, Kelly had a team-leading 13 rushing attempts for 59 yards for Tennessee (2-1). A noticeable omission from the Vols' line-up is redshirt junior DT Dan O'Brien (6-2, 305, Flint Powers Catholic), a two-year starter and leader upfront for Tennessee. For undisclosed reasons, O'Brien has been suspended by the Vols for the past two contests. Let's hope everything clears up -- O'Brien has an NFL future. On the sidelines, Tennessee is led by head coach Butch Jones, a Saugatuck native and Ferris State grad.

Finally, in the CMU-Syracuse contest, the visiting Chippewas (1-2) battled hard before falling 30-27 in OT to the Orangemen (3-0). Junior QB Cooper Rush (6-3, 225, Lansing Catholic Central) finished 37-of-51 passing for 430 yards and two TDs for CMU. Senior TE Ben McCord (6-4, 240, Warren Cousino) had an outstanding game for the Chips with 10 catches for 147 yards and one TD. At running back, sophomore Devon Spalding (5-11, 205, Westland John Glenn) had a fine, all-around performance for CMU ending up with 185 total yards (rushing and receiving) and one touchdown. The Chippewas could be one of the best 1-2 squads in the country, losing to Oklahoma State 24-13 and defeating Monmouth 31-10. CMU's two losses have come by a combined 14 points. Of Central's 22 starters, 18 come from the state of Michigan. The Chippewas are led by head coach John Bonamego, a Paw Paw native and CMU graduate. For Syracuse (3-0), redshirt junior DE Ron Thompson (6-3, 255, Southfield) finished with five tackles and three tackles for losses for 21 yards. Thompson, another NFL prospect, is a two-year starter for the Orangemen. Also starting for Syracuse was sophomore LB Parris Bennett (6-0, 215, U-D Jesuit). Bennett led the Orangemen with 10 tackles and one tackle for loss.

Michigan's top 25 players for class of 2018 -- Nos. 11 through 25

Michigan's top 25  high school football players for the class of 2018. Below are players 11 through 25.

11. Cole Schut-6-3, 255-OT-DT-Holland-Bruiser upfront for the Dutch. Physical presence on both sides of the football. One of west Michigan's top prospects.
12. Josh Mayberry-6-1, 280-C-Detroit King-Starter as a sophomore for one of the Midwest's best teams/programs. Anchor in the middle for Crusaders.
13. Nolan Bird-6-2, 175-QB-Grand Ledge-Coach's son. Smart, heady player for premier Lansing-area program.
14. Giovanni Agazzi-6-3, 265-OG-Livonia Stevenson-Big, strong kid in the trenches for power running squad. Starts as sophomore for one of western Wayne County's (Detroit's county) top teams.
15. Jayden Day-5-10, 180-QB-Muskegon Orchard View-Slippery, cat-quick signal-caller for Cardinals. Tough in the open field. Could possibly switch to RB with his skill set.
16. Cody Carone-6-4, 290-OL-C-DT-Rockford-Possibly the next great O-lineman from Grand Rapids-area powerhouse (Former Rams OL in NFL, Adam Kieft, CMU, Cincinnati Bengals, 2005-2008 and Joe Staley, CMU, San Francisco 49ers, four-time Pro Bowl player, 2007-present).
17. Robert Daniel-5-11, 170-DB-Oak Park-Following in the footsteps of former Knight All-Stater John Kelly (class of 2015, now playing in the SEC at Tennessee) as possibly the next big time D-I recruit in the secondary for Oak Park. 4.5 40. Akron, Miami (OH) offers.
18. El Julian Jordan-6-1, 205-QB-Detroit King-Starter as a sophomore for Crusaders. Poised, skilled QB for state-ranked King. Sparkplug for one of the country's most talented skill position groups (multiple D-I players at WR and RB positions).
19. Jalen Mayfield-6-5, 225-TE-DE-Grand Rapids Catholic Central-Started as freshman for Cougars. Outstanding all-around athlete. Also played varsity basketball as frosh for Catholic Central. Length and athleticism make Mayfield an intriguing prospect.
20. Ryan McCafferty-6-8, 250-OT-Battle Creek Harper Creek-Size alone should attract D-I recruiters. Athletic big man who also plays basketball for Beavers. Should be interesting to follow McCafferty's progress these next two years. Could project out to 6-8/6-9, 295/300 as senior OT for Harper Creek. Should attract plenty of Big Ten interest down the road.

21. Braeden Childress-6-4, 215-TE-QB-Big Rapids-Phenomenal athlete. Could be 6-4, 245 TE prospect or 6-4, 225 QB recruit by senior season. Brother Brandon is a freshman WR at CMU.
22. Trevor Dilley-6-4, 255-DT-TE-St. Joseph-Could be next big-time, high-level D-I recruit for Bears. Current teammate Corey Malone-Hatcher (6-4, 245-Jr.-DE) is being recruited by all the top college programs, but Dilley could be just as much in demand by the time he's a senior. Already seeing action on both sides of the football for St. Joseph, Dilley is a beast-in-the-making.
23. Eric McArn-5-10, 210-RB-Southfield-With U-M RB recruit Matt Falcon (6-1, 215) out with an injury, McArn has stepped in and proved he's also a D-I level recruit this season for the Bluejays. Bruising, powerful runner with speed, McArn is the type of every-down, physical back Big Ten programs crave. And to think he still has two more years to punish opposing defenses...
24. Antwan Reed-6-7, 270-OT-Muskegon-Prototypical D-I offensive tackle prospect. Plays for one of Michigan's traditional powerhouse programs.
25. Jake Moody-5-11, 160-PK-Northville-Normally kickers aren't in a top 25 football prospect list, but I had to include Moody simply because of his powerful leg. With still two more seasons to continue to prove his accuracy, Moody has nothing to prove about his distance strength. In a game earlier this season for the Mustangs, Moody kicked a 50-yard FG. That's pretty good/impressive for a sophomore in my book.

Michigan's top 25 high school football players for the class of 2018

It's extremely early, but I figured I would put together my opening list of the top 20 sophomores in the state of Michigan. Like every year in the Great Lakes State, the class of 2018 is already looking like a group filled with big-time, high-level Division I college football talent. So, without further adieu, here is my early, early top 25 players for Michigan's class of 2018 (of course, like most of my class lists, this ranking will be fluid as the season progresses and new talent emerges).

Top 25 players for Michigan's class of 2018-

1. Marquan McCall-6-3, 295-OG-Oak Park-Similar to Detroit Lions guard Larry Warford. Projects out to 6-3, 325 or so. Powerful run blocker. Oak Park head coach Greg Carter is one of Michigan's best and has been developing and preparing multiple future D-I players for decades at Detroit DePorres, Inkster and Oak Park. McCall will definitely be well-schooled and play-ready by the time he reaches the next level. U-M offer.
2. Reggie Pearson-5-10, 170-DB-River Rouge-Best player at River Rouge since 10-year NFL running back Chester Taylor (Toledo, Baltimore Ravens, Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals, 2002-2011). Ball hawk, had five interceptions as a freshman defensive back starter for Panthers. Just a pure football player. Also plays in one of the finest high school football stadiums in the Downriver area (Detroit's southern suburbs). CMU, EMU, WMU offers.
3. Tyrone Sampson-6-4, 290-OL-C-DT-Detroit East English Village-Another powerful drive blocker. One of the talent-rich Detroit Public School League's top, young prospects.  Michigan State recruiting. Akron offer.
4. Jimmy Bell-6-8, 310-OT-Saginaw Arthur Hill-Could eventually rise to the top of this list. Raw, but unbelievably talented. Basketball player, has good feet, long arms, agility. Starter as freshman. Most high-level D-I schools recruiting. In two years, once Bell grows into his body, he could be one of the nation's best at his position.
5. Jason Whittaker-6-4, 190-QB-Rockford- Strong-armed signal-caller for Michigan powerhouse program. Has Big Ten size and length, with potential to grow to 6-4/6-5, 210/215 range by senior year.
6. Kalon Gervin-6-0, 175-DB-Detroit Cass Tech-Seeing action as sophomore for national power in loaded secondary already filled with D-I recruits. Runs 4.4 40. If Gervin continues to progress as a player, he could be a high-level nationwide recruit in two years.
7. Caden Prieskorn-6-4, 195-QB-Lake Orion-Like Rockford's Whittaker, Prieskorn is a big, talented quarterback for a perennial state power. Elite athlete. Three-sport standout in football, basketball and golf.
8. Brandon Gray-6-5, 175-WR-Southfield-Still rangy and raw, but overall skill/potential is off the charts. Teams with one of the nation's top freshman recruits, quarterback Sam Johnson (6-3, 185, has six D-I offers already) to form potent pass-catch combo. In two years, Johnson to Gray might be unstoppable. Would be quite a coup for some instate college program to sign both players (I'm talking to you MSU, U-M). Bowling Green State, Akron, Ohio offers.
9. Ryan Hayes-6-6, 240-TE-OT-Traverse City West-Long, lanky, big-bodied athlete from northern Michigan football factory (multiple D-I players in past decade). Has the frame to develop into big-time OT prospect or huge, mobile TE recruit. I see Hayes as a 6-7, 275/285 behemoth as a senior. He has Big Ten written all over him.
10. Ovie Oghoufo-6-2, 195-LB-WR-Farmington Hills Harrison-Physical, tough player from legendary Michigan program. Like most of these players on this list, has room to grow physically and skill-wise, but, also like all of these players on this list, is no doubt a high-level D-I recruit. Runs 4.7 40. Will more than likely add 10-15 pounds or more and drop his 40 clocking to 4.5/4.6 by the time he's a senior.

Up next-Players 11 through 25 for class of 2018.

Hayes, Rison and Walker are all D-I level transfers new to the program this season. Last season, the Eagles lost to Westland John Glenn 35-10 in Week 1. In contrast, this year in Week 1, Skyline defeated Glenn 38-14. Should be interesting to watch the development of this squad.).

Michigan's top five teams -- No. 5 Saline

5. Saline- Like a few teams on this top five list, Saline has a bit of unfinished business to attend to in 2015. Last season, the Hornets reached the Division 1 state championship game only to lose to Clarkston 33-25. This year, Saline is determined to take that next step -- and capture a state title.

Leading the Hornets (12-2 last season) this year will be senior quarterback Josh Jackson (6-2, 200). Jackson, verbally committed to Virginia Tech, is one of the country's top dual-threat signal-callers. Possessing a cannon for an arm and tailback speed, Jackson is a difficult game plan for any opposing defensive coordinator. On the receiving end of most of Jackson's passes will be senior wideout Jeb Palka (5-11, 165, 4.5 40). Palka, who caught 77 passes last season, is a D-I recruit who has an uncanny knack for finding the seams and spaces necessary to get open on any given play. If Palka is double-teamed, then Jackson has one of the state's best security blankets in big, mobile junior tight end Bryce Wolma (6-4, 225), a returning starter and a high-level D-I recruit in his own right. Upfront, Saline will be led by seniors tackle Tyler Schrzan (6-4, 260), guard Brandon Brown (6-1, 255) and guard Alex Bromley (6-6, 300).

Defensively, returning starters senior end John Raupp (6-0, 195) and junior tackle Sean O'Keefe (6-4, 225) will anchor the front line for Saline. At linebacker, senior Cal Livesay (6-1, 205) returns, while in the secondary, senior Cal Criner (5-10, 175) returns to pace the back end for the Hornets.

Up next -- Quick capsules of teams 6 through 10.

Michigan's top five teams -- No. 4 Detroit King

4. Detroit King- To put it simply and succinctly, Detroit King is loaded with talent. No question. The Crusaders (8-2 last season, first round playoff loss), are poised to have their best year since 2007 when King captured the Division 2 state championship defeating Midland 47-21. The 2007 Crusader squad was led by future NFL players linebacker Nick Perry (USC) and defensive back Chris Greenwood (Albion College). In 2015, King looks to have even more talent than the Perry-led Crusader team.

Offensively, King just might have the finest collection of skill position players in the state, if not the Midwest. At tailback, senior Martell Pettaway (5-9, 210) is a threat to score anytime he touches the football. With 4.5 speed, the West Virginia commit combines speed with power and is one of the most explosive players in Michigan. At wide receiver, senior Donnie Corley (6-2, 195, 4.5 40) is one of the nation's best, holding offers from MSU, U-M, Ohio State, LSU and basically all the big-time D-I schools, while on the other side of the field will be senior Armani Posey (6-2, 205, 4.6 40), another high-level D-I recruit. Both Corley and Posey are outstanding two-way players, with Corley shining at defensive back and Posey at linebacker. At quarterback, multi-talented sophomore El Julian Jordan (6-1, 205) will take the reins of the offense. Jordan takes over for senior Mikale Washington (6-4, 190), an All-PSL performer a year ago after throwing for 1,839 yards, with 27 TDs and four interceptions. A Big Ten-level prospect, Washington transferred to a school in Virginia over the summer. Upfront, King will look to seniors guard Dylan Swanson (6-4, 275), guard Melvin Sylvester (6-2, 285) and tackle Leon Page (6-3, 240), along with sophomore center Josh Mayberry (6-1, 280) to control the trenches.

Defensively, senior tackle Justin Turner (6-3, 255), Sylvester and Page (CMU verbal) will be forces on the D-line, while at linebacker, D-I prospect senior Lawrence Bryant (6-1, 225), junior Cepeda Phillips (6-0, 220) and Posey will form one of the top units in the state. In the secondary, King arguably has the best back four in the country. At cornerback, senior Lavert Hill (5-10, 170, 4.4), a Penn State commit and junior Ambry Thomas (6-0, 180, 4.4), who holds offers from MSU, U-M, Wisconsin, Iowa, LSU, Tennessee and Ohio State, to name but a few schools after his services, form a potent CB combo. At safety, senior Dontre Boyd (5-11, 185, 4.5), a WMU commit and Corley will handle the Crusaders' last line of defense.

On Sept. 26, King hosts PSL rival and the state's No. 2-ranked team Detroit Cass Tech in what should be one of the nation's top games of the year. Last season, the Technicians defeated the Crusaders 39-7. Between both squads, there could possibly be close to 30 future D-I players (from all class years) competing in the contest.

Michigan's top five teams -- No. 3 Muskegon

3. Muskegon- Though the Big Reds might not have even the most talented team in Muskegon (arguably that would be Muskegon Mona Shores, my No. 6-ranked squad in Michigan), what the defending Division 3 state runner-up does have is a burning fire in its belly few in the state can match. For the past three seasons, the Big Reds (12-2 last year) have come tantalizingly close to winning a state championship, only to fall short in the title game. Prior to last season, Muskegon had lost in consecutive years to Birmingham Brother Rice in the Division 2 state championship contest (35-28 in 2012 and 38-21 in 2013), before dropping a hard-fought 7-0 game to Orchard Lake St. Mary's in the D-3 final in 2014. It's safe to say the Big Reds (Michigan's all-time winningest program and ranked in the top 10 in the nation for victories) are tired of making the long trek across the state from the far western shores of Lake Michigan to downtown Detroit's Ford Field in the southeastern part of the state, only to suffer three straight defeats.

Because of its recent history, I'm ranking Muskegon as my No. 3 team in the state heading into the 2015 season. To make matters worse, the Big Reds, for the first time in a long stretch, weren't even the best team in their own city last year. Mona Shores (eventual Division 2 state runner-up in 2014) beat Muskegon in a colossal heavyweight battle 48-27 in Week 9, handing the Big Reds their first loss of the season as the state playoffs loomed. So, as one can see, Muskegon has a lot to play for this season -- possibly more than in usual years.

Of course, the proverbial cupboard is far from bare, talent-wise, within the Big Red program heading into the 2015 campaign. To start with, Muskegon just might have the best offensive line on the west side of the state, and possibly the top O-line in Michigan. Four of the five starters return upfront from last season's state runner-up squad. Returning for the Big Reds will be senior tackle Corion Ross (6-3, 245), senior guard Dylon Oplinger (6-1, 240), senior center Khari Wilcox (6-0, 230) and senior guard Derices Brown (6-1, 255). If that wasn't enough size, experience and talent in the trenches, Muskegon also returns senior tackle Juanye Johnson (6-3, 285), who was injured and unable to play in last season's final. Johnson is being recruited by Big Ten and MAC schools and is the No. 3-ranked offensive lineman in Michigan. At quarterback, the Big Reds will have junior Kalil Pimpleton (5-7, 160). Though diminutive, Pimpleton is an absolute jet on the field and will be hard to find behind Muskegon's massive offensive line. As always, the Big Reds will have speed all over the field, with junior receiver Jacorey Sullivan (6-2, 205, 4.6 40) aiming for a breakout season in 2015.

Defensively, Muskegon allowed just 14 points per game last year and returns five starters from a season ago. At defensive end, senior Jordan Redmond (5-10, 190) returns to rush the passer, while the Big Reds will have plenty of big bodies to rotate at the tackle spots. At linebacker, senior Tarrion Hill-McKay (6-1, 210) is one of the state's best, using his speed to make tackles from sideline-to-sideline. In the secondary, Muskegon returns cat-quick seniors Keyante Carpenter (5-10, 180), A.J. McClanahan (5-11, 160) and Jacarius Scott (6-0, 165), along with Sullivan.

Up next -- No. 4-ranked Detroit King

Michigan's top five teams -- No. 2 Detroit Cass Tech

Michigan's 2015 high school football season is underway as teams complete their first week of practice. Every year, the Great Lakes State fields some of the nation's best teams. Here is a look at Michigan's No. 2-ranked squad, Detroit Cass Tech.

2. Detroit Cass Tech- One of the country's premier high school football programs, the Technicians (12-1 last year) have reached the Division 1 (Michigan's big school division) state semifinals the past four years, winning the championship in 2011 and 2012. Every season, Cass Tech produces multiple D-I college football players, with most years seeing the Technicians send double-digit numbers of gridders to the next level. This season, Cass Tech reportedly has 17 D-I players suiting up for the Green and White.

Offensively, if the Technicians can find a replacement for graduated running back Mike Weber (Ohio State), Cass Tech could have the state's most explosive offense. Led by D-I recruit junior quarterback Rodney Hall (6-3, 210), the Technicians, normally a power running club, could have one of Michigan's most prolific passing attacks this season. Returning at one wide out will be arguably the nation's No. 1-ranked junior receiver in Donovan Peoples-Jones (6-2, 195). Peoples-Jones, being recruited by every big-time college football program in the country, has been clocked at 4.3 in the 40 and has crazy-level athletic talent. If that wasn't enough to make opposing defensive coordinators sweat, on the other side of the field will be senior flanker Marcel Paul (6-1, 175), a 4.4 40 guy who's verbally committed to Cincinnati. Though the skill level talent is through the roof, what makes the Technicians' offense potentially unstoppable will be a massive offensive line filled with D-I prospects. Anchoring the O-line will be senior guard and Michigan commit Michael Onwenu (6-3, 305). At the other guard spot, senior Ostell Martin (6-6, 315) will line up, while at center senior Alvin Clemons (6-1, 265) will hold down the fort. The bookend tackles will be senior Taeshon Trotter (6-6, 300) and junior stud Jordan Reid (6-4, 285), who already holds offers from Florida and Tennessee.

Defensively, upfront Cass Tech should be stout with senior defensive end Eldrick Matthews (6-4, 280), Onwenu, Clemons and Reid taking plenty of snaps, while at linebacker senior Tim Walton (6-2, 225), an Illinois commit, and junior Zach Morton (6-3, 215, Cincinnati offer), will be making tackles all over the field for the Technicians. In the secondary, Cass Tech will have multiple D-I prospects roaming the back end. Leading the star-studded group will be senior safety Demetric Vance (6-2, 200), who runs a 4.4 and is verbally committed to Michigan State. Next to Vance at safety will be junior Jaylen Kelly-Powell (6-0, 185), another 4.4 speedster who is being recruited by all the big name schools. At cornerback will be lockdown junior Donovan Johnson (5-9, 170), another high-level D-I recruit.

Up next -- No. 3-ranked Muskegon.

Michigan's top five teams for the upcoming 2015 season -- No. 1 Orchard Lake St. Mary's

Since I've listed, position-by-position, the top players/prospects in the state of Michigan for the class of 2016 and ranked my top 92 (and still growing) players/prospects for the class of 2017, I figured it was time to switch gears a bit and focus on some of the Great Lakes State's best high school football teams for the upcoming season.

Here are the top five high school football squads for the state of Michigan heading into the 2015 season. As always, Michigan fields some of the nation's best teams and programs year after year and this season appears to be no different.

Michigan's top five football teams for the 2015 season-

1. Orchard Lake St. Mary's- The defending Division 3 state champions return seven starters on offense and four starters on defense entering the 2015 campaign. Last year, OLSM (12-2 a year ago) scored 395 points (28 points per contest), while allowing only 159 points (11 points per game average) the entire season. Playing in one of the country's toughest conferences (the Detroit Catholic League Central Division), the Eaglets' two losses last season came on a combined 15 points to national powerhouse Birmingham Brother Rice (28-20 and 35-28).

Offensively, St. Mary's returns quarterback senior Brendan Tabone (6-0, 185) and blazing tailbacks seniors Justin Myrick (5-10, 190) and Ryan Johnson (5-9, 170). Johnson has reportedly been clocked at 4.4 in the 40. Blocking for Myrick and Johnson will be returning starter fullback senior Pierce Bauer (5-11, 210). All around talent, senior Brandon Adams (5-11, 195), who will line up at running back and receiver, returns and is one of the state's top utility-type players. At receiver, OLSM returns shifty junior Kahlee Hamler (5-9, 165), a 4.4 open field nightmare for opposing defenses. Hamler has already been offered by Michigan State and multiple other D-I programs. Up front, leading the charge will be returning seniors tackle Cameron Kolwich (6-4, 285) and guard Scott Kowalski (5-10, 235). Kolwich has verbally committed to Northwestern and is one of Michigan's best.

Defensively, St. Mary's could be absolutely lethal. The Eaglets' back seven could be one of the nation's fastest and most talented. Orchard Lake will have to find some big bodies up front (never a problem for the Eaglets), since all four starters graduated, but its linebacker corps could be Michigan's best. To begin with, the state's No. 1 junior Josh Ross (6-1, 225, MSU, U-M, Ohio State, Notre Dame among offers) will be making tackles sideline to sideline from his linebacker position. Add fellow blue-chip junior Dwayne Chapman (6-1, 210, with multiple D-I offers) and returning starter Bauer to the linebacker group and that's as good as any unit in Michigan. In the secondary, junior D-I prospect Richard Bowens (6-1, 175, Minnesota offer) and Hamler will man the cornerback spots, while returning starter senior Tyler Cochran (6-2, 185) and Myrick will line up at safety.

Special teams will be stellar with Adams returning to handle both the punting and kicking duties, while Hamler is one of the state's most electrifying kick returners.

Up next -- No. 2-ranked Detroit Cass Tech.

Top 10 kickers/punters for Michigan's class of 2016

As with all football positions, the state of Michigan is chock-full with talent even in the special teams/kicking department. Every season, the Great Lakes State has big-time Division I level kicking talent. Michigan's class of 2016 is loaded with talent in both placekicking and punting. Here are the top kickers for Michigan's class of 2016.

Top 10 kickers/punters for Michigan's class of 2016-

1. Quinn Nordin-6-0, 175-PK-P-Rockford-Widely regarded as not only Michigan's No. 1 kicker, but the nation's best (Michigan's No. 46 overall ranked player), as well. Similar to Kyle Brindza (Plymouth, Notre Dame, Tampa Bay Buccaneers) in that at the next level, Nordin could handle both the punting and placekicking duties. He's a special talent. Verbal to Penn State.
2. John Camillari-6-0, 165-PK-Walled Lake Western-Last season was 44-of-48 PATs, kicked 12 FGs, including a 42-yarder. Named to the Detroit News All-Metro North first team last year. Though Nordin receives most of the attention kicker-wise in Michigan, Camillari (Michigan's No. 83 overall ranked player) is also one of the nation's top players at his position and a high-level D-I college football prospect in his own right. Named to Michigan's Associated Press Division 1-2 All-State first team last season.
3. Brevan Bender-6-1, 180-PK-P-Alma-Booming leg. Talented as either punter of placekicker.
4. Joe Philipp-5-10, 170-PK-Hillsdale-Converted 6-of-8 FGs and 49-of-52 PATs last season. Named to the Jackson Citizen-Patriot Dream Team last year. Earned Michigan Associated Press Division 5-6 All-State honors last season.
5. Kevin Large-5-8, 175-P-Utica Ford-Named to Detroit News All-Metro East team last season.
6. Josh Hood-5-9, 160-P-Newberry-Top kicker in the Upper Peninsula. Named to the U.P. Dream Team last season.
7. Riley Creamer-5-10, 180-P-Lansing Catholic Central-Averaged 37 yards per punt last season for the Division 5 state runner-up Cougars. Named to the Lansing State Journal Dream Team last year.
8. Alex Kessman-6-2, 185-PK-P-Clarkston-Helped lead Wolves to Division 1 state title last season handling both punting and placekicking duties. Has kicked 56-yard FG in game. Pittsburgh offer.
9. Austin Watrous-5-10, 170-PK-P-Caledonia-Excellent all-around kicker. Powerful leg, accurate. One of the Grand Rapids area's best.
10. (tie) David Vinsky-5-11, 200-P-Farmington Hills Harrison-Also Hawks' starting QB. Legendary Harrison head coach John Herrington calls Vinsky the state's best punter. 'Nuff said. Chris Ornelas-5-10, 165-PK-Belding-Has booted multiple 40-plus yard field goals throughout prep career. Was 16-of-16 on PATs last year. Had three touchbacks on kickoffs. Named All-Ionia County first team last season. Brandon Baker-5-11, 170-PK-Grand Ledge-Has booted 44- and 42-yard FGs already in 2015 season. Brad Williams-6-3, 185-P-PK-Temperance Bedford- One of the state's top punters, plus also accurate leg for PATs and FGs.

Michigan's top 10 quarterbacks for the class of 2016

Always a fertile ground for high school football quarterback talent, Michigan's class of 2016 is once again loaded from top to bottom with Division I-caliber signal-caller prospects.

Last season was one of the best in recent memory in Michigan with six quarterbacks signing Division I scholarships (Alex Malzone, Birmingham Brother Rice, U-M; Jake Johnson, DeWitt, CMU; Brandon Childress, Baldwin, CMU; Tyree Jackson, Muskegon Mona Shores, Buffalo; Jon Wassink, Grand Rapids South Christnan, WMU; Dakota Cupp, Waterford Mott, CMU). Two more QBs from Michigan's class of 2015 were definite D-I talents, but have taken different routes with Travis Russell (Grand Rapids West Catholic) deciding to play for D-II powerhouse Ferris State and Jayru Campbell (Detroit Cass Tech) suiting up for Garden City Community College in Kansas.

The talent just keeps overflowing for the state of Michigan at the quarterback position, as the Great Lakes State has multiple D-I signal-callers in the class of 2016. This season, in my opinion, Michigan has more dual threat-type QBs than in year's past. Either way, if a D-I college football coach is looking for a classic drop back passer or a pass/run type QB, Michigan should be stop No. 1 on any recruiter's road trip. Here are Michigan's top 10 quarterback prospects for the class of 2016.

Top 10 quarterback recruits for Michigan's class of 2016-

1. Tony Poljan-6-7, 230-Lansing Catholic Central-Michigan's No. 1 overall recruit. Led Catholic Central to the Division 5 state runner-up spot last season (losing to Travis Russell and Grand Rapids West Catholic). A year ago, Poljan threw for 2,802 yards, with 34 TDs and four interceptions. He also rushed for 1,017 yards and scored 22 TDs. Poljan also started at safety for the Cougars. An elite athlete, Poljan is also a high-level D-I college basketball prospect. Runs a 4.7 40. At the next level, if needed, Poljan has the size and frame to switch to TE or DE. How he got out of the state of Michigan is a mystery to me. Verbal to Minnesota.
2. Josh Jackson-6-2, 200-Saline-Speed, size and throwing ability make Jackson one of the top dual threat QBs in the nation. Behind Jackson, the Hornets finished as Division 1 state runner-up last season. Verbal to Virginia Tech.
3. Pat Naughton-6-2, 210-Comstock Park-Outstanding signal-caller from the Grand Rapids area. Not receiving as much recruiting chatter as I think he should be. Last season finished with 1,465 yards passing, with 13 TDs, while rushing for 1,062 yards and 14 TDs. Will be three-year starter for Panthers.
4. Matt Hartwick-5-11, 170-New Boston Huron-Arguably one of the most exciting players in the state of Michigan. As close as this state gets to Antwan Randle-El. Crazy talented signal-caller, Hartwick was the impetus behind the Chiefs' drive to the Division 3 state semifinals last year (the best season in school history).  Runs a 4.4 40. Last season, Hartwick threw for 1,064 yards and 10 TDs with two interceptions, while running for 1,328 yards and 15 TDs. Hartwick was named the Monroe News Player of the Year and earned News-Herald (Detroit's southern suburbs, the Downriver area) All-Area accolades last season. If not a QB at the next level, Hartwick would be a dynamic slot receiver, tailback or defensive back. A smart D-I college football recruiter/coach will offer this explosive and talented player.
5. Jake Smith-6-1, 180-Ithaca-Another strong dual threat QB. Smith can hurt defenses with either his arm or legs. Last season he helped lead the Yellowjackets to the Division 6 state runner-up position.
6. Joe Bob Walker-6-5, 235-Ann Arbor Skyline-An intriguing athlete. Walker isn't as polished as most on this list, but there is no doubting his overall talent and potential. With D-I level talent at the receiver position (Hunter Rison-Jr., MSU verbal and Guy Brent-Sr.), Walker will have plenty of weapons at his disposal. Though a D-I prospect at QB, Walker could also project out to a TE or DE at the next level. Walker runs a 4.6 40.
7. Wade Buckman-6-6, 205-Holland-Classic drop back, pocket passer. Big Ten body and length. Good speed for his size. Runs a 4.7 40. One of the best QBs on Michigan's west side of the state.
8. Paul Hurley-6-2, 195-Romeo-Another powerful pocket passer, Hurley threw for 1,779 yards and 16 TDs last season. Plays some of the best competition in suburban Detroit week after week in the Macomb Area Conference. Earned Detroit Free Press All-East first team honors last season.
9. Patrick Briningstool-6-0, 195-Clinton Township Chippewa Valley-Combines with Stefan Claiborne (Michigan's No. 12 overall player) to form one of the most dangerous pass-catch combos in the state. Last season, Briningstool threw for 1,851 yards on 114-of-199 passing, with only six interceptions. Was named to the Detroit News All-Metro East first team last year.
10. Clay Senerius-6-4, 190-Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes-Prolific passer. Strong, accurate arm. Passed for over 2,400 yards and 33 TDs last season. Named to Michigan's Associated Press Division 7-8 All-State first team last season.

Other top QBs for Michigan's class of 2016-Spencer Peterson-6-5, 225-Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian (sat out last season after transfer from Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern, D-I size and arm strength), Ozzy Corp-6-5, 200-Ishpeming (Led Hematites to the Division 7 state runner-up spot last season, also starts at DB, one of the U.P.'s best), Evan Whitmore-6-3, 195-Petoskey (4.6 40), Danny Whitt Jr.-6-1, 185-Detroit Northwestern (run/pass threat, also could play WR, FS at next level), Logan Martin-6-2, 195-Essexville-Garber (1,600 yards passing and 23 TDs, 800 yards rushing and 12 TDs last season), Jimmy Seewald-6-5, 215-Dearborn Divine Child (1,900 yards passing and 17 TDs last year), Frank D'ascenzo-6-2, 190-Sterling Heights Stevenson, Jake Lipetzky-6-5, 190-Riverview Gabriel Richard (second only to New Boston Huron's Matt Hartwick as Downriver's most talented QB, also D-I baseball prospect as pitcher), Martin Petersen-6-4, 220-Hillsdale (878 yards passing and 10 TDs, 498 yards rushing and five TDs last year). Alex Nicholson-6-2, 215-Salem (Incredible athlete, three-year starter for Rocks, runs 4.5 40, also top LB prospect).

Top 10 tight end prospects for Michigan's class of 2016

From NFL greats Paul Seymour (Royal Oak Shrine, U-M), Pete Metzelaars (Portage Central, Wabash College), Rodney Holman (Ypsilanti, Tulane), Ron Kramer (East Detroit, U-M) and Fred Arbanas (Redford St. Mary, MSU) to recent pro standouts Antonio Gates (Detroit Central, Kent State), Tony Scheffler (Chelsea, WMU), Kellen Davis (Adrian, MSU) and Dion Sims (Orchard Lake St. Mary's, MSU), the state of Michigan has traditionally churned out big-time tight end talent year after year.

The class of 2016 is stacked from top to bottom with high level Division I tight end prospects this season. Here are the top 10 tight end recruits for Michigan's class of 2016.

Top 10 tight end prospects for Michigan's class of 2016 --

1. Cedric Lattimore-6-5, 265-Detroit East English- I know he's destined for the D-line at the next level, but he's an absolute load on the offensive side of the ball, as well. He's simply a dominating two-way player. Verbal to Iowa.
2. Josh Eldridge-6-4, 245-Clintondale-Like Lattimore, could possibly play defense in college. He's also a talented DE for the Dragons. Big, strong and mobile, Eldridge is a match-up problem for any defender. Verbal to CMU.
3. Keidren Davis-6-5, 230-Grand Rapids Union-Best D-I prospect at Union in decades. Big Ten body and speed. I think the upside for Davis is as high or higher than any other player on this list. The Rockets are getting a steal. Verbal to Toledo.
4. Jaye Patrick-6-5, 220-Detroit Western-Unbelievable athletic talent. Helped the Cowboys capture the Class A basketball state championship last winter. Long arms and leaping ability make Patrick a big-time prospect. U-M recruiting hard.
5. Evan Conn-6-5, 220-DeWitt-Not getting much talk statewide or throughout the Midwest, but Conn is one of Michigan's best. Another top-notch hoops player, Conn runs a 4.8 40 and can jump out of the proverbial "gym." Also a D-I LB-DE prospect.
6. Riley Woolford-6-3, 245-Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central-A two-way starter for the defending Division 6 state champions, Woolford is arguably the best blocking TE in Michigan. Also a bruising DE for the Falcons, Woolford is a throw-back type player who is physical and rugged.
7. Jaylon Moore-6-4, 260-Detroit Consortium-Could project to OT at the next level, Moore is a dominating force for the Cougars. Another basketball standout, Moore has excellent footwork and quickness for a player his size. Verbal to WMU.
8. Drew Beesley-6-3, 225-Warren DeLaSalle-Returning two-way starter for the defending Division 2 state champion Pilots. Beesley is an excellent blocker for DeLaSalle, one of the top programs in the Midwest. Also stout DE. Could play either position in college. Verbal to Bowling Green State.
9. Mitch Heaton-6-6, 215-Clarkston-One of only three juniors to start for the two-time defending Division 1 state champion Wolves last season. Heaton has the height and frame to project out to 6-6, 255 or so at the next level. Big-time prospect from one of Michigan's best programs.
10. Caleb Symons-6-4, 210-New Lothrop-One of my top sleepers. From one of the best small school programs in Michigan, Symons is a beast on both sides of the football for the Hornets. Extremely physical, Symons was state runner-up in wrestling last year at 189 in Division 4. He was a key member on New Lothrop's D-4 state championship grappling squad a season ago. He runs a 4.8 40. On the gridiron, he helped lead the Hornets to the D-7 state quarterfinals (regionals), losing to eventual state champion Detroit Loyola.

Other top TE prospects for Michigan's class of 2016- Jaylen Bradley-6-3, 230-Flint Carman-Ainsworth (one of Flint's top prospects, also hoops player), Nolan Givan-6-4, 225-Berkley (speed, size and length make Givan a top prospect), Mitch Heimbuch-6-3, 225-Romeo, Nathan Skene-6-3, 220-Hartland, Landin Mitchell-6-4, 240-Goodrich, Jordan Hendricks-6-4, 240-Milan, Shane Fugate-6-2, 220-Dearborn Divine Child, Steve Glenn-6-3, 250-Lincoln Park (also talented QB, runs 4.7 40), Connor Sisty-6-3, 215-Ida, Max Thrower-6-4, 220-Royal Oak Shrine (Interesting prospect, runs 4.5 40, could play WR or switch to defensive side of football at next level).

Michigan's top 10 defensive backs for class of 2016

For any Division I college football coach or recruiter, the state of Michigan is an absolute must stop if searching for defensive backfield help. For the Great Lakes State's five D-I playing colleges, finding and signing big-time, elite talent in the secondary should be as simple as looking within their own backyard. As is the case most years, Michigan has some of the best prospects in the country suiting up this upcoming season in the defensive backfield.

Traditionally a strong state when it comes to producing and developing DB talent, Michigan's class of 2016 is well-stocked with Big Ten-level players roaming the secondary this year. Here are the Great Lakes State's top 10 defensive back recruits for the class of 2016. As usual, every player on this list is without a doubt a top-tier D-I prospect.

Top 10 defensive backs for Michigan's class of 2016-

1. Demetric Vance-6-2, 200-Detroit Cass Tech-Punishing hitter from the safety position. Also excellent coverage skills for a player his size. Runs 4.4 40. Complete package. Verbal to MSU.
2. Stefan Claiborne-6-2, 185-Clinton Township Chippewa Valley-Besides Detroit King's Donnie Corley (Michigan's No. 6 overall prospect), Claiborne arguably is the state's top two-way player. A do-it-all type performer, Claiborne excels in all three phases of the game. Last season he had 83 tackles and one interception returned for a TD, 25 receptions for 10 TDs and six blocked kicks. Runs 4.5 40. Illinois, Iowa offers.
3. Hunter Broersma-6-1, 185-Muskegon Mona Shores-Another two-way standout. Could play DB or WR at next level. Runs 4.5 40. Helped lead Mona Shores to D-2 state runner-up last season. Verbal to WMU.
4. Lavert Hill-5-10, 170-Detroit King-Pure lockdown-type corner with smooth hips and quick feet. Sticks like glue to opposing receivers. 4.4 speed. Verbal to Penn State.
5. Devin Taylor-6-1, 175-Lansing Sexton-Big, physical cornerback with 4.5 speed. Led Sexton to D-4 state runner-up a year ago. Big Ten-level body, speed. Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, etc. need to sign this DB stud.
6. Deandre Oakes-Owens-6-1, 175-Muskegon Mona Shores-Another big-time talent from blue collar, football talent-rich city off the shore of Lake Michigan. Transfer from Muskegon Reeths-Puffer. Muskegon Chronicle Dream Team selection last season after intercepting six passes and recording 28 tackles. Somewhat of a sleeper, but a must-see for D-I recruiters.
7. Mark Wilson-6-1, 185-Detroit Renaissance-Earned Detroit Free Press All-Detroit first team accolades last season. Also skilled WR. Teammate OT Alaric Jackson (6-7, 285, state's No. 6 OL prospect) gets a lot of attention and deservedly so, but Wilson is also high-level D-I material.
8. Marquis Smith-5-11, 175-Ypsilanti-Can play multiple positions on the football field. All-around player with speed and natural football instincts. Ann Arbor All-Area selection a year ago. Verbal to Kansas.
9. Traivon Clayton-5-10, 175-Dearborn Heights Robichaud-Detroit News All-Metro West first team last season. Intercepted five passes, returning two for TDs. Also had 52 catches as WR for 1,034 yards and 16 TDs. Runs 4.4 40.
10. Gage Kreski-6-3, 190-St.Ignace- Top recruit in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Best DB prospect from U.P. since Escanaba's Dean Altobelli (MSU starter in mid-1980s). Already a two-time U.P. Michigan's top 10 running backs for the class of 2016

The state of Michigan has produced some of football's greatest running backs. From Heisman Trophy winners Pete Dawkins (1958, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook, Army) and Mark Ingram Jr. (2009, Flint Southwestern, Alabama, NFL) to Detroit Public School League legends Marion Barber (Detroit Chadsey, Minnesota, NFL), Harlan Huckleby (Detroit Cass Tech, U-M, NFL) and John "Frenchy" Fuqua (Detroit Eastern, Morgan State, NFL) to Tyrone Wheatley (Dearborn Heights Robichaud, U-M, NFL and the best HS player I've ever seen compete in person) to Hall-of-Famer Jerome Bettis (Detroit Mackenzie, Notre Dame, NFL) the Great Lakes State has produced its fair share of big-time running back performers throughout the decades.

Add to that impressive list current NFL running backs Joique Bell (Benton Harbor, Wayne State, Detroit Lions), Jonas Gray (Detroit Country Day, Notre Dame, New England Patriots), George Winn (U-D Jesuit, Cincinnati, Detroit Lions), Glenn Winston (Detroit Denby, Northwood University, Cleveland Browns), Edwin Baker (Oak Park, MSU, New Orleans Saints), Zurlon Tipton (Sterling Heights Parkway Christian, CMU, Indianapolis Colts), recently drafted Jeremy Langford (Westland John Glenn, MSU, Chicago Bears) and Ingram (Flint Southwestern, Alabama, New Orleans Saints) and one can see quite clearly Michigan is one of the country's best at developing running back talent.

Michigan's top 10 wide receivers for the class of 2016

With three of the all-time top 30 in receptions in NFL history hailing from the state of Michigan (No. 13 Derrick Mason, MSU, Detroit Mumford; No. 16 Muhsin Muhammad, MSU, Lansing Waverly; No. 26 Andre Rison, MSU, Flint Northwestern), the Great Lakes State is routinely one of the country's best when it comes to cultivating and developing big-time Division I college football talent at the wide receiver position.

With players such as U-M recruit Brian Cole (6-2, 210, 4.3 40) of Saginaw Heritage, WMU signee Anton Curtis (6-3, 195, 4.5) of Detroit East English Village, CMU recruit Rayshawn Wilborn (6-4, 215, 4.5) out of Lansing Sexton and U-M recruit Grant Perry (6-0, 185, 4.4) of Birmingham Brother Rice leading last season's wide receiver group, the class of 2015 had some of Michigan's best receiver prospects in years. Add in CMU QB recruit (and All-State basketball player, Class D Player of the Year and a high D-I recruit in hoops) Brandon Childress (6-3, 195) out of Baldwin, a small northern Michigan high school, who I believe, if he isn't quarterbacking the Chippewas someday, could become an All-American-type level receiver at the next level, and the Great Lakes State was absolutely stacked at the wideout position last year.

For Michigan's class of 2016, the riches at the receiver position just keep pouring out. Incredibly, this season's group of receivers, from top to bottom and pound-for-pound, might be the state's best in years, if that's even conceivable, considering the depth of top-flight talent Michigan has produced at the position throughout recent seasons. That being said, here are the top 10 wide receivers for the class of 2016 in Michigan. I think it goes without saying each player is a high Division I college football talent.

Top 10 wide receivers for Michigan's class of 2016 --

1. Donnie Corley-6-2, 190-Detroit King-No. 6 overall player in Michigan, caught 62 passes for 1,100 yds. and 16 TDs last year. Also a talented CB, had 11 ints., seven ints. returned for TDs and 38 tackles. MSU, U-M, Notre Dame, OSU, Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee, LSU a few of the schools who have offered.
2. Jalen Martin-6-3, 200-Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy-Top flight basketball recruit, unbelievable athlete, speed, size, leaping ability. MSU, U-M recruiting. WMU, EMU already offered.
3. Dez Fitzpatrick-6-3, 190-Waterford Mott-Silky smooth receiver. U-M, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Wake Forest all offered. Verbal to Louisville.
4. Kaleb Perry-6-2, 180-Mount Pleasant-Another D-I level basketball recruit, premier athlete, one of state's top high jumpers. Nightmare for defensive backs to cover -- can outrun, out jump and out-athlete most, if not all, DBs assigned to cover him. 36 rec., 900 yds, 9 TDs a year ago. Verbal to WMU. MSU, U-M also recruited.
5. Daryn Snow-6-3, 190-Portage Northern-One of my top sleepers in Michigan. In a recurring theme, Snow is a talented hoops player (school's leading scorer as soph.). Last season caught 48 passes for 617 yards and 8 TDs. With great size, another match-up problem for opposing DBs. Flying a bit under the radar at the moment, but a legit D-I Big Ten-level wide receiver prospect. Where are Indiana, Purdue, Iowa, Illinois, etc. on this guy?
6. Bailey Edwards-6-2, 185-Chelsea-Ann Arbor All-Area last season, 25 rec., 629 yds., 9 TDs, 4.4 40, little brother of WR Braylon (Harper Wood Bishop Gallagher, U-M, NFL) and RB Berkley (Chelsea, Minnesota). Father Stan played at Detroit Kettering, U-M and the NFL as RB. Minnesota offer. Wisconsin, Purdue also recruiting.
7. Trishton Jackson-6-3, 185-West Bloomfield-Detroit News All-Metro pick as a basketball player this past season. D-I prospect in hoops (varsity starter as frosh). Explosive athlete. Has started at QB since freshman year for West Bloomfield. Threw for over 2,000 yds. and rushed for over 1,000 yds. last season. Could play either QB or WR at next level. One of those freak athletes that can do it all. Verbal to MSU.
8. Simeon Kemp-6-0, 175-Flint Hamady-Flint Journal Dream Team, 35 rec., 1,080 yds., 14 TDs, 2 KO return TDs, 4.4 40. Another player not getting as much publicity statewide or nationally as he deserves. Electric performer on the football field. Small school, big-time talent.
9. Gabe Steed-6-1, 175-Lowell-Maybe most exciting player for the state power Red Arrows since "Mr. Football" Mark Catlin in the early 2000s. Caught 34 passes for 818 yards and 10 TDs a year ago.
10. (tie) Mike Robb-6-6, 200-Midland Dow-Saginaw News Dream Teamer, 47 rec., 606 yds., 9 TDs; Zach Kohn-6-3, 180-Gibraltar Carlson-Detroit Free Press first team All-West, 42 rec., 575 yds., 8 TDs.

Michigan's top 10 defensive linemen for 2016 class

For anyone who checks out this blog, one would know I consider the big fellas in the trenches on both sides of the line of scrimmage as the most important players on the football field. Yesterday, I listed the top offensive linemen in the state for the class of 2016, so today I'll list my top 10 defensive linemen in Michigan for '16.

As usual, defensive line talent in Michigan is off-the-charts good. If a college coach is looking for pass rush help, the Great Lakes State is a must stop this upcoming season. Michigan is loaded with long, lanky, quick defensive ends with pass rush abilities this year. What's intriguing, however, about this season's class of D-line prospects, is the potential of most of the DE prospects to add substantial weight to their frames and bulk up and be combo-type linemen who can switch from outside to inside and vice-versa at the next level. Add to those prospects, an impressive group of pure defensive tackles and space-eaters up front, and a college coach has all he would need to form a dominating D-line right here in the Great Lakes State.

Top 10 defensive linemen for Michigan's class of 2016 --

1. Lawrence Gordon-6-6, 255-DE-Saginaw Arthur Hill-Unlimited potential. State's next Robaire Smith (Flint Northern, MSU, 11-year NFL career)?
2. Michael Onwenu-6-2, 315-DT-Detroit Cass Tech-Alabama, Ohio State, Miami (Fla.) all offered. Verbal to U-M.
3. Khalid Kareem-6-4, 250-DE-DT-Farmington Hills Harrison-Ohio State, MSU, U-M, Northwestern, Notre Dame all offered. Had 18 sacks last season. Verbal to Alabama.
4. Mark Brooks-6-7, 250-DE-Portland-Huge upside. I see him possibly being a Tyler Hoover (Novi, 6-7, 295 former starting DT for MSU, Rose Bowl champ, currently with NFL's Indianapolis Colts)-type player at the next level eventually. Verbal to WMU.
5. Adetokunbo Ogundeji-6-5, 225-DE-Walled Lake Central-Size, speed, length make Ogundeji a top tier D-I prospect. Oregon, Cal offered. Verbal to Notre Dame.
6. Patrick Mayrand-6-4, 280-DT-Dexter- Big Ten size, with athletic ability. One of the Ann Arbor area's top college prospects.
7. Darrick Gibson-6-2, 305-DT-Chippewa Valley (transfer from Clintondale)- One of the best pure defensive tackle/nose guards in the state. Suburban Detroit potential star at next level. 4.9 40. Best D-line prospect from Clintondale since 2015 Pittsburgh Steelers sixth round draft pick L.T. Walton (6-5, 320, DT, CMU).
8. Gabe Bauman-6-3, 245-DE-Rockford-Grand Rapids area stud from top flight program.
9. Chauncey Golston-6-6, 240-DE-Detroit East English Village-Similar to Arthur Hill's Gordon with huge wingspan and crazy athleticism. Runs 4.7 40. Verbal to Iowa.
10. Dan Perry-6-2, 265-DT-Lapeer-Big time talent. Division 1 (Michigan's large school division) heavyweight state champion wrestler this past winter. Three-year starter on D-line. I project him to 6-2, 295-305 range at next level, with great balance, feet, hands.

Top 10 offensive line prospects for Michigan's class of 2016

Only four times in the history of the NFL draft has an offensive lineman been selected as the No. 1 overall pick. Two of those four players are native Michiganders. In 2008, Lapeer East's Jake Long (Michigan) was chosen as the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins, while Rochester Stoney Creek's Eric Fisher (Central Michigan) was selected No. 1 overall by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013. The other two O-linemen picked No. 1 overall in the draft were USC's Ron Yary (California) in 1968 by the Minnesota Vikings and Ohio State's Orlando Pace (Ohio) in 1997 by the St. Louis Rams.

My point is, if history is any indication, the state of Michigan is one of the top states in the country when it comes to churning out top quality offensive linemen. The class of 2016 is no different -- it's chock full of high level Division I college football talent. Is there another future NFL No. 1 overall draft pick in the following group? I guess only time will tell -- though out of any state in the Union (if history is used as a measurement), Michigan appears to be the place to look/recruit for the next future NFL No. 1-er at the offensive line position.

174. Connor Chupailo-6-4, 265-OT-TE-Zeeland West-One of the best drive blockers I've seen in a while. Starter on O-Line for unbeaten, power-running Division 4 state champions. Also plays basketball. Physical, athletic player with huge upside. Somewhat of a sleeper, but a Big Ten-level player for sure, with further development.
175. Keshawn Evans-6-4, 285-DT-OT-Detroit Central-Big, thick behemoth in the trenches, a dominant, physical presence on both sides of the football for the Trail Blazers. Had 108 tackles, with 65 solo tackles, seven forced fumbles and eight sacks from his DT position as junior. Named first-team All-Detroit by the Detroit Free Press. No question a high-level, Big Ten, SEC-type prospect out of the talent-rich Detroit PSL.
